A Curious Expedition

Some time ago I read that these lines came from the books in Canterbury Cathedral and thought they would be appropriate to share with you.

If nobody smiled and nobody cheered
And nobody helped us along,
If each, every minute, looked after himself
And the good things all went to the strong;
If nobody cared just a little for you,
And nobody thought about me,
And we all stood alone in the battle of life,
What a dreary old place this would be!

Around the same time, I  went on an internet excursion and found the most magical site. If you love books, have an interest in old buildings or beautiful art, you would have absolutely adored this place! It had a wonderful collection of photos, some of which I found to be quite haunting, others full of the richness of the old masters and some just plain intriguing, unfortunately the site is no longer there.

The photo above was amongst my favourites, it facinated me and there was a familiarity about it.

This one almost looks like it has just popped out of a Harry Potter movie!

  1. Now that library with multiple levels, balconies and stairs is something my husband would love to have! (I think he even has enough books to fill it!)
I love the detail of old buildings too.

    1. I have one of those too Sam, his library of books has taken over every shelf in our house (yes all, except in my doll room & studio).

That's probably why you are so good at building your doll houses. I wish the website was still up & running so I could have provided a link, you would have found inspiration there and I'm sure you would have loved it. :)

      Big hugs,

P.S. I figured out why the library seemed so familiar to me, did you ever watch "The League of Extrordinary Gentlemen"? I'm sure there was a room in one of the scenes that looked like that.

    2. I have seen the movie but cannot remember the library. Maybe I need to watch it again.

    3. If you find it Sam, let me know so I don't go nuts thinking about it. :)

  2. I really love that poem and it rings very true.

Those are some breathtaking photos. I also love that one with the spiral staircase and big library. That would be my idea of heaven. It actually reminds me a little of that scene from Beauty and the Beast when the Beast shows Belle to his private library.

  4. WOW! Now that is some library! I've never seen any of the Harry Potter movies but I would certainly enjoy browsing through that book collection.

  5. Beautiful poem!

There is something special with libraries. The nearest ones around here are rather stiff and dull, nothing like Hearst Castle Gothic Study, USA or Skywalker Ranch Library, USA (one can travel and learn a lot surfing the net...).

But one sad library story is this: http://www.messynessychic.com/2014/06/17/seriously-though-how-did-the-most-beautiful-library-in-america-get-demolished/

Have a wonderful new week. Hugs!
